Now THAT'S Theatre!

I went to a WONDERFUL play this past weekend. It was "Stick Fly" at the Matrix Theatre. A friend invited me because an acquaintance was in the play. Turns out the acquaintance was someone with whom I had shared a "Boston Legal" set. Yes, we have the same last name; no we aren't related.

This well-written, superbly-acted play handles the trifecta of class, race, and family drama as it related to an upper-class African-American family summering in Martha's Vineyard, and it does so expertly, all while enveloping you in a story sure to leave your wheels turning long after you leave the theatre. Actress Tinashe Kajese's work was absolutely brilliant, but the whole cast was wonderful. The run was supposed to end this past Sunday, but it has been held over for two more weeks. If you are in or near Los Angeles, I have three words for you: "Go." "See." and "It." Yes, it's a play with (almost) all black people in it, and I know some may be tempted to dismiss it as "Just another black play." but to do so would be a disservice. This work deals with universal themes, and not a bunch of stereotypical caricaturizations that we see all too often. It's something different. And I mean that in a good way.

Information can be found HERE.

Let me know what you think of it.
